Abundance

neverending%20yarn.jpg

I've been knitting from this cone of yarn for over three months, but you'd hardly know by looking at it.

Instead of placing all the live border stitches on holders, I decided to leave them all on the needles and knit back and forth, short-row style. Excellent for picking up and attaching stitches, not so great for progress photography. I think I'm on the seventh repeat of the center motif, but I haven't really counted lately. All I know is, there's a lot there, and there's a lot to be done. :)

At this point in the project, I'm suffering from a lot of yarn envy. Every pretty skein I see for sale on the internet, I want to possess, particularly if it's handpainted, variegated, or striping (hello, Kauni). Normally I would stay away from these kinds of yarn for lace knitting, but I think the endless sea of pale blue has triggered an unexpected rebellion in some part of my subconscious....

So you will be done in no time at all! If I understand right you have now 3 sets of needles? one on each side right and left and the one you are knitting with?

I forgot! Once you are done we could consider a trade for the left over blue yarn. I need a change from white!

Wow... That's quite a cone you got! So I have 4oz of Pink Zypher... Wanna trade? ;) Your shawl is beautiful even if it doesn't photograph well. I can't wait to see your finished piece!

I'm the opposite. I've knit several lace things with Koigu and other hand dyes, and I'm loving your blue. I just blocked my daughter's Spiders Web last night. She knit it with Zephyr. I unpinned it this morning. It's gorgeous. I'm thinking I'm going to have to do something with Zephyr next. Your's is going to be absolutely fabulous!

That's a seriously HUGE cone! LOL!

Only one word comes to mind: heavenly.

You are definitly your mother's daughter! Not in the lace knitting, which I envy your work, but in the yarn collecting. I don't think we are collectors as much as just plain wanting more when it comes to yarn. I especially like variegated yarn. Love, Mom

Good Lord that is one ginormous cone of yarn! As beautiful as it is, I can definitely see why other colors are bringing out the rebel in you after all that though. Variety is the spice of life. :)

Wow - Love the color and you are really making progress on that shawl. Beautiful! I can understand why you are so tired of looking at it though- I know it will be done soon.

It's beautiful, though! Sorry about your blue fatigue, but I can understand completely!

Visualization problem here: when you say you are knitting the border back and forth, short-row style, does that mean you are including wraps? I would think that wraps would "uglify" a lace border, even after they were picked up.

That is absolutely beautiful.

I think that is a lovely color of yarn! What yarn is it? Sorry if you have said already what it is and I missed it!

Yikes, and I thought the cone of yarn I've been using for a recent lace project was huge! Yours dwarfs mine, and is in a much more beautiful colour! The shawl is looking beautiful, by the way! I'm in awe!

OMG...that is absolutely stunning! You're giving me hope that one day I will be finished with mine! (ok, ok, ...I have a long way to go still since I have just started the edging!) I love the colour!

I love your work and am so glad you take the time to share it. I was wondering on average how many hours a week do you knit?

Posted by: Maureen at February 20, 2008 10:16 AM

this looks like a task of gargantuan proportions...

Alice! Keep your eye on the prize. You are not a Kauni girl, though I do understand the attraction. You may have my permission to purchase some coppery colored yarn and make something for me :) Hey, it works for Carolyn...

It's certainly growing despite the cone of yarn looking no different than when you started!!! but it really is a work of art you're creating when I see a new post it makes me :o) because I know I'm always in for a treat when I read it...

Wow! What a gorgeous shawl! I was directed here by a potential customer who wants to buy some of the very same yarn. I think you got it from my eBay store, but I have no records for Alice Faye, so am guessing that's a screen name. :-) Or maybe someone else bought it from me and gave it to you as a gift. No matter, really, but I must tell you I am awed, amazed, and delighted to see what you have done with my old mill-end cone! It really does yield an insane amount of yardage. I think you could knit a shawl the size of a football field and still have more to spare. Glad you've been enjoying the stuff. Wow. Just....wow!

Hah! I understand completely about the blue fatigue. My first lace project was a WHITE shawl and as my deadline approached (mom's b'day) I had time only for the shawl--white, white, and more white all the time. After it was done I was so color deprived I bought a skein of crazy variegated koigu and a hank of wild colinette point five. So far, I've used maybe a 1/4 of the koigu (it knitted up into clown barf) and I've yet to use the point five.

Your shawl looks fabulous even if you can't get a great shot yet. I must say, that is a really large amount of yarn but good yarn is never wasted with an excellent knitter such as yourself. Still, I well know the temptation of variegated yarn so maybe you should treat yourself to something once you get done with the Princess just for a change of pace!

This lace is absolutely gorgeous!! I love the color and your work is so inspiring!

Posted by: Connie at February 24, 2008 01:08 PM

I would never tell another knitter to stint on yarn! By all means, buy as much variegated yarn as your heart desires :-)
