Estonian lace

estonian1.jpg

I have made some progress on the Estonian lace shawl, Faroese-style. This is the center panel, which is motif #5 in the book Pitsilised Koerkirjad.

The side panels will be variations on motif #260. I'm using Malabrigo lace, which is soooo soft--it's shaping up to be a warm and cozy (dare I say practical, even?) shawl.

A few more notes on this book: You can purchase it here. A group of knitters have been knitting swatches that you can peruse. And, yes, the book is written in Estonian--see the symbol translations.

And then there's this:

Elizabeth Zimmermann's tomten baby jacket from Knitting Without Tears, for a dear friend's soon-to-be baby.

Also, I suddenly have this inexplicable urge to knit an Aran sweater. Something to do with the changing seasons? Strange subliminal messages sent to my brain from Ravelry?

The Estonian lace is fantastic! what yarn are you using?

Gorgeous lace! I love the Malabrigo yarn too. And you're knitting a sweater! How cool is that! I love that you're not using insipid pastels.

Branching out, eh? I blame Ravelry, too, for a lot of things. :)

Your Estonian lace is lovely! Yes, all I need is another lace book in a language I don't speak. I can't even quite figure out how much this book costs or how to actually order it! I will wipe the drool from my laptop now and say that as Winter sets in, a nice Aran sweater would be a lovely thing to knit. I used to knit those way back when, but I'm too afraid to do any in case I get sucked into cables again to the detriment of my lace knitting. I love E-Z patterns. simple but cleaver. Ravelry has infected us all! Wonderful projects as is your wont :-)

the lace is looking a lovely, it reminds me of a DNA helix and I see you are back to your favourite colour ;) The baby jacket looks great too and I know what you mean about urges to do non-lace knitting, I have an urge to knit a DK jacket... don't you feel guilty? I do !

Ooh pretty lace and I actually gasped when I saw regular old garter stitch in a non-cobwebby weight on the blog! Cute sweater. Ravelry is quite the enabler. My sister blogged about a fair isle sweater she's started and now I wanna tooo....

Lovely lace! I happen to have similar projects at the moment: a lace stole (my second lace project), though it isn't very far along yet, a Tomten jacked (again, not very far along), and want to knit the Tangled Yoke cardigan (there's my cables). However, the socks I've been working on have been getting more attention recently

Long toward morning (as my mother used to say), I found the little flag at the top right of the site that has the book. When you click on it, you get English rather than German. I've placed an order, because I love that first motif! The price is given in Euros--my total Paypal charge was just under $50, including shipping and a surcharge for using PayPal.

(Chanting) CABLES! CABLES! CABLES!!! I go back and forth between lace and cables all the time. How's the new J-O-B coming along? And, I'm having trouble seeing your photos. Any idea why? And, are you planning on going to Rhinebeck? Enough of the 20 questions. Hope you are well.

Mmmm, Malabrigo lace. Mmmm, red. Mmmm. Estonian lace. Drooling... I'm having fun with my copy of Pitsilised Koekirjad, too - am about 75% of the way through a shawl I've designed using a variation of stitch pattern 76 (page 39). I'm using the more-than-triangular shape that I learned doing the Erich Engeln shawl from Spitzenstricken 58 (increasing an extra stitch on each outer edge, every other row). In deep aubergine yarn. Yummy. It's no Malabrigo, though. Are you thinking of publishing your design once you're done? Or just designing for your own pleasure? Either way, it's nice to see another ode to Estonian lace taking form.

I totally understand the need to knit Aran sweaters. Cables, twists and crosses are as alluring as laceweight and YO's when the weather gets colder. Perfect fireside, DVD watching knitting.

You just made me order a book ;-)
