Spring Shawl

The Spring Shawl, designed by Sharon Miller of Heirloom Knitting. Knit on 2mm needles with gossamer 55% merino/ 45% tencel blend acquired from the Skaska Designs booth at Rhinebeck in 2006. I used 60 grams, or approximately 1550 yards of this yarn, which is finer than the Shetland cobweb yarn called for in the pattern. The final dimensions of my version: 39" long and 64" wide, compared to the 48" length and 92" width of the original.

Initially, I thought the yarn was a bit scratchy to work with, but it grew on me eventually. It needs a gentle hand, though--it broke a couple of times while I was winding it into a ball. Also, some of the stitches that I had reserved for picking up the edging got tangled up and snapped when I tried to remove the waste yarn (a thin, smooth cotton). Not a pretty sight, but the stitches in question were in a garter row section, lessening the intensity of my freakout.

Tomorrow I start my new job. And fall semester classes. Assuming I survive this week, I'll reveal details of my current project next time. Hint: it's lace. :)

That is the most breathtaking piece I've ever seen. The color and the pattern go so well together. Lovely! Good luck with both the new job and the new semester. Can't wait to see the next knitted item.

This one is simply spectacular. If I had knit this shawl, I'd be afraid of post-partum depression.

I've got nothing original to add to the gasps and admiration of the previous comments. But I have to repeat them -- that is so beautiful. A stunning piece of knitting. Good luck with the new job.

Posted by: Octopus Knits at September 4, 2007 09:22 AM

Oh, that is stunning! I love the red (and so do you, I'm thinking--the Bee was red too!) What did you do about the broken provisional stitches? That would be a really informative post, if you're not too traumatized to get into the details...

Posted by: Beth S. at September 4, 2007 02:32 PM

Gorgeous as always Alice, but I do keep hearing a little jingle in my head every time I visit here! You surely know the one, Queen, Another one bites the dust.... LOL. It does look absolutely stunning in red, and it looks like good practice for the Princess. K

Posted by: Kathy at September 4, 2007 03:26 PM

All the progress shots did nothing to prepare me for the breathtaking wonder of the shawl in all its breathtaking glory. Wow. Your next project is lace? No! I'm shocked!

You've done it again! Wow! That'll be the perfect shawl to pull out in 7-8 months time and celebrate the arrival of Spring. And one of these days you'll have to give us a peek into your shawl chest, because I'm sure it's a knockout. The only question is, how do you decide which one to wear?

Posted by: Adam at September 6, 2007 07:07 PM

I haven't visited in a long time and am very impressed. This truly is a beautiful work of art. Much success for the upcoming semester and new job.

And she does it again! Your lace knitting is the best lace on the internet - by a mile. Which could make you the best lace knitter in the world. I love your colour choice and your photography. And the speed. You're my lace hero. Or heroine. Best of luck with you're job and studies, can't wait to see what you've got up your sleeve next.

Posted by: knitabulous at September 16, 2007 11:38 PM

Cars and houses are quite expensive and not every person is able to buy it. Nevertheless, credit loans are created to help people in such hard situations.
