Christening Shawl

cs1.jpg

Women's Own Christening Shawl, designed by Gemma Ord (aka Gladys Amedro). Pattern purchased here. Knit with less than one skein of obscure Russian wool procured from eBay last spring.

This is definitely one of the most enjoyable projects I've worked on lately--aside from a few fatigue-inducing looooong plain knit rows after picking up the main body stitches. I think I actually dozed off during a couple of those.

I never quite felt the love for the rose and anchor section in the original pattern, so I replaced it with a fir cone motif. Works pretty well, I think!

The pattern calls for Jamieson and Smith cobweb yarn on 3.25mm needles for a 50" square shawl. I used a slightly thinner yarn on 2.5mm needles and ended up with a 46" square shawl. Still big enough for baby-wrapping, I presume.

Lovely, as always! One day I hope to be able to knit as beautifully and fearlessly (changing yarn AND needle size).

Lovely! Watching your lace knitting has never been boring! That eBay seller seemed to have disappeared! How do you like that yarn?

so lovely! i am doing a circular shawl from the center out... i may need help :-)

!!!!!! I have no words to describe how lovely it is (and am feeling guilty to have peeked, but how could I not??). Piglet has done nothing so far to have earned such a beautiful treat. I'm telling it to be on much better behavior from now on!

Alice, that is just absolutely lovely. Well done!

absolutely stunning as always..... Jamiesons may sell more patterns if they used your knitting as examples of their patterns.....

That is really lovely! It looks great with the fir cone pattern instead of those anchors and roses! I have too many shawls/stoles on the needles to start that one yet but when I do, I will consider replacing that section as well. Great work!

Another exquisite lace shawl. I don't know what the original pattern looks like, but the fir cones look just perfect to me!

Oh, it's absolutely lovely. And the fir cones look like they were meant to be there all along. :-)

That is stunning, Alice! Just picture it wrapped around the Corn Bunting. Tasteful, yes?

BRAVO! Love the fir cone design. Dozing during the knit rounds was funny! Wish I were that good! m:)

I enjoy your blog SO much and always love dropping in to see what you are making. This Christening Shawl is just totally beautiful. I love the fir cone (even though I have no idea what it replaced). Great job! Thanks for all the wonderful pictures and details.

Looks beautiful! How do you do all this serious knitting and take classes too? I have half the output on less complex patterns.

Posted by: Valerie at July 4, 2007 11:36 PM

I seem to have run out of superlatives for your lace work! It's amazing and unless your friend is having a christening for a 12 year old, you're good.

Absolutely exquisite, I'm so impressed. Mind if I link to it?

OH. MY. GOD. I don't know how you did it, but it's incredible. Congratulations, it's indescribably awesome.

such beautiful knitting. I have just finished wedding ring shawl too. With Lacis, I think mine may have come out a little smaller too, don't know because haven't blocked it yet. Am bereft. Have some lovely Helen's lace wool but will it make a whole shawl - any advice? also, I think your blue flower is a kind of trillium. such beautiful knitting - did I say that before? but it is!!! :)))

Gorgeous! Pictures are so much nicer than the original. Really like the pinecone pattern. As for the pretty little blue thing. Look up Tradescantia Virginiana. Spiderwort. Love that plant. Available in white and pink too.
