Growing things

shawlongrass.jpg

Ah, school. The summer session is slightly compressed--about two weeks shorter than regular semesters--so I got to have my first anxiety attack over deadlines even earlier than usual. Thank God for lace knitting and beer, not necessarily in that order.

But let us talk of pretty things. The christening shawl grows--slowly. But at 400 or so stitches per round, things are going much more quickly than they were at 900+.

While dealing with those early long rows, I had plenty of time to think about whether I was really and truly going to knit all those roses and anchors. And did I really approve of this potentially puzzling "pip stitch" maneuver?

It turns out that the answer to both of these questions was "no."

I substituted a fir cone pattern. It felt like the RIght Thing to Do.

And what else has grown?

38 more repeats to go on the Wedding Ring Shawl edging. I had hoped to get this done before classes started. Ha. At this point, my only estimate for a finish date is "sometime this summer. I hope."

In garden news, varmints have been seemingly thwarted by the fence for the time being. The seedlings are happy. All hail Jon of the Fence.

Plus, pretty blue mystery flowers have appeared in the back yard:

The shawls are both so beautiful! Love them. And your blue mystery flower is a spiderwort (Tradescantia).

Pip stitch? I ordered the pattern, but it is now 8000 miles away, so I can't see what they might be. For now, I can enjoy your eye candy--it's truly gorgeous!. Finish the WRS already!

Your WRS is magnificent! You are making wonderful headway considering everything you have to do! I'm stalled at the border for now and knitting other things. I am so glad you are not doing the anchors and roses on the christening shawl. I think it's one of the reasons I never knit it myself though I've had this pattern for years. I think you made a wise choice using the fir cone pattern. Glad your garden is thriving and that the little visitors have to go elsewhere for a snack! Beautiful lace!

Wow, your lace wedding ring shawl sure has grown! Beautiful!

I was also going to identify those flowers as spiderwort, a beautiful wildflower. I'm impressed that you can substitute stitches in lace knitting.

Hi! This shawl is soo beautiful! How do you have patience to finish it??? Amazing!!

Posted by: Ille at June 5, 2007 12:53 PM

Miss Alice, Both your shawl are breathtakingly gorgeous. Words fail me and to think they are not even finished yet. How big is the Wedding Ring shawl? I'm envious of everyone who has that pattern. I don't know if I can wait for the re-release.

Not sure but your mystery flower may be a type of trillium?

Posted by: John at July 10, 2007 12:52 PM

The mystery flowers are tradescantia. Here's the wiki reference. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tradescantia Lovely woodland/shade and moisture loving. Too pretty to think of as a weed.
