The Dear Jane project

J-7%20chicken%20tracks.jpg

These days, more than usual I am preoccupied with thoughts of large, complex, delicate projects--the Unst Stole, Orenburg shawls, the Wedding Ring Shawl. And this:

dearjanequilt.jpg

The 1863 Jane A. Stickle quilt. You can read all about it at the Dear Jane site.

Carolyn invited me to join a group of intrepid quilters undertaking this ambitious and beautiful project, including the talented and brave Heidi, Jen, and Melanie.

169 4.5-inch square blocks surrounded by 52 triangles and four corner triangles. My plan is to hand-piece and applique the whole thing. Shades of blue with a muslin background. My first block (J-7, Chicken Tracks) is pictured above. You can see where it fits (looking so lonely!) into the larger quilt on my design wall. (Blank design wall template created by Sharon Mastbrook.)

This is a Long Term project. You'll be hearing about it for many, many (many!) months to come. :)

Wow that is amazing. Simply amazing. I'm honestly stunned by it. I just love quilts, although I'm not a quilter 2 of my aunts are and they do amazing work. But that quilt is beyond gorgeous, it's simplya work of art.

WOW. How large is that quilt?! How big is the square that you've already sewn? My sense of scale can not comprehend the enormity.

You are what I would call a long-crafter. I recently read about the Dear Jane. I have to admit part of me was drawn to it, perhaps in another lifetime. Looking forward to seeing your progress.

Sounds a lot like me. These days, I am into making things that will last, and the longer the process takes, the more enjoyable it is. I am just finishing a Christmas stocking that I started making for my daughter in January. I like the "long-crafter" comment. ;-) Looking forward to seeing your progress on this quilt unfold. My blog is also about WIP more than stuff that I finish on a daily basis. Your knitting is beautiful, too, by the way.

hmmm that's funny, it kinda looks like you have TWO blocks done when i look at that design wall!!! SUSPICIOUS!!!

Wow - that's quite the undertaking! Although, from a knitter of your caliber it shouldn't be a problem. I'm a knitting quilter (or a quilting knitter) too, and am currently working on fine lace (not quite as fine as yours, though), while designing and making a new king sized bed quilt. Hand piecing has always been my favorite method of piecing, but I've noticed that my hand pieced blocks just never seem to come together ... hmm. Hopefully you won't have that problem! Keep posting about the knitting progress, if it is happening concurrently. Thank you!

I have a couple friends who are Dear Jane people. It's like a cult! It sucks you in! But what a fabuous quilt.

Ha! I was thinking the same thing as Carolyn and then assumed that, like in Bingo, in Quilting the middle square is a "free space"! Probably no such luck, tho. . . so pretty, Alice!

The shades of blue should be really beautiful!

What a fabulous quilt idea! Of course it's way beyond my very basic quilt making talents but I'll love watching you do it:-)

It's an amazing quilt. I can't wait to see your pieces as they come along and the your completed version of the quilt.

Miss Alice, you ARE ambitious.
