Alien flower parade

alien%20flower%20parade.jpg

I neglected both Stor Rund Dug and Merike's gloves to work on the curtain this weekend. My own design--just a simple muslin panel with a band of flowers along the bottom edge. It's about halfway done.

As you may have guessed, I'm having lots of fun with this one. :) Practicing lots of fun things from my beloved Mary Thomas' Dictionary of Embroidery Stitches.

Long and short shading, French knots

Squared filling, star filling

alien%20flower%203.jpg

Seeding, burden stitch

alien%20flower%204.jpg

Satin stitch, TĂȘte de Boeuf stitch, squared filling. (I think the squared filling on this one looks like teeth...)

Whipped spider's web, woven spider's web, squared filling with French knots

Coming soon: what happens when a doily becomes (gasp) tedious?

Tiny, tiny needles

stor%20rund%20dug%20progress%201.jpg

Progress on Stor Rund Dug--row 61 of 129.

I'm knitting this on size 000 (1.5mm) needles with Halcyon Yarn's 20/2 Pearl Cotton. As it looks like lumpy ass in its unblocked state, I was starting to doubt my sanity in using the tiny needles and, well, thread. But a bit of pinning and stretching has renewed my faith in both pattern and materials.

stor%20rund%20dug%20progress%202.jpg

It's a fairly simple pattern, too--a Feather and Fan variation. Good old Feather and Fan. Possibly even more pleasing than piping and rick rack....

Happy owl fun time

owl%201%20detail.jpg

Rainy, dreary days here. Not so good for photographic efforts.

Mr. Owl is from a set of Aunt Martha's transfer patterns ("Hooty Owls"). I plan to stitch a few more and then do something...patchworky.

owl%201.jpg

Four projects currently next to the couch in various stages of progress: embroidered owls for undetermined project, embroidered curtain for downstairs bathroom, Stor Rund Dug doily on size 00 steel dpns (flopping around and drivng me crazy), and the second Merike's glove from Folk Knitting in Estonia (the first was finished last fall).

I do sleep, really I do.

Stor Lysedug

stor%20lysedug%20detail%201.jpg

Yes, I am slowly making my way through the doilies on the Yarn Over site. When will this madness end? How long will you all tolerate the doily parade?

stor%20lysedug%20detail%202.jpg

Once again, Cebelia 30 on 2mm needles. I completely forgot to measure this one. My guess is 20 inches in diameter.

stor%20lysedug%20detail%203.jpg

A little knitting ennui going on over here this week. I'd like to get started on another shawl with a nice wool yarn. But I'm not sure what project to choose. I picked up the Unst Stole again, but after 6 out of 10 repeats for the center portion, I still haven't decided to commit. I've been playing around with the Heirloom Knitting CashSilk and design ideas out of my own brain, but I'm not sure I'm motivated enough to think that hard right now.

Perhaps some light cabling is in order--like the second Merike's Glove from Folk Knitting in Estonia. Hmm....

Feathered

bird%20cushion%20detail%201.jpg

Another embroidery interlude.

bird%20cushion.jpg

Sometimes I'm productive in my boredom at work and sketch embroidery designs on post-it notes. Sometimes they actually get stitched....

bird%20cushion%20detail%202.jpg

Lots of practice with single feather stitch.

Piping, why didn't I discover you many pillows ago? You are my new favorite. Piping on everything from now on!

Legends of the Shetland Seas

lossdetail%201.jpg

Finally.

lossdetail%202.jpg

Garter stitch prettiness.

lossview%203.jpg

Legends of the Shetland Seas stole, designed by Hazel Carter. I used a little less than one skein of Ornaghi Filati Merino Oro in color 110, garnet. Size 1 (2.5mm) needles. Final blocked measurements: approximately 22 inches wide, 70 inches long. It took about 6 weeks to knit, mostly because I kept getting distracted by doilies and embroidered monkeys during the edging bit.

(I had just stumbled out of bed when these photos were taken. Let's just say we're lucky I managed to comb my hair first.)
